Simulations optimize brain PET scanner

A helmet-like PET scanner for brain imaging is being developed by a multi-institutional research team. Initial simulations showed that the ambulatory microdose PET (AMPET) device offers a more than 400% increase in sensitivity and requires a much lower radiation dose than conventional whole-body PET scanners. Additional simulations using a seated AMPET design reconfirmed the fourfold sensitivity increase and the ability of a helmet PET to resolve smaller features than existing cylindrical brain PET scanners.
